                                                                      	fluted on the 5 or four sides outwards, so as to be of
                                                                      section a or b opposite (I suppose it to have a joint
                                                                      at each angle)  The crown about it is of eight separate
                                                                      pieces of red Verona:  set on a separate block of the same
                                                                      as seen in drawing;  these also are trefoiled only to the
                                                                      front.  Their elevation and section at fig 2 p 47 1
                                                                      The flat ball in[s] the niche spandril below is curious
                                                                      conf.  Ca d’Oro:  the Madonne dell ‘Orto has the same
                                                                      in its restored niches, and several other Venetian church
                                                                      es:  (San Stefano and St Apollinare)?  Arc[f]h section
                                                                      fig 3 and capital at fig 4, it has a perfectly simple
                                                                      round headed Lombard leaf at each angle.  The white block
                                                                      on the left of fig 1 is a rough mass put up behind its
                                                                      innter shaft - very dexterously out of sight from below, to
                                                                      give it strength.  The inside of the niche is a pure and
                                                                      simple cross vault, horizontal at top.  Thus much for
                                                                      the eastern niche:  The western, still towards sea, is the
                                                                      same in most respects, but is evidently a later imitative
                                                                      work. the capital has the morbid and curvilence section
                                                                      fig 5 p 47 1 and looks like a perfect tulip. a curious
                                                                      instance of the spoiling of a simple design in later hands
                                                                      The northern and western niche - over judgment of Solomon
                                                                      is the most remarkable I found in Venice;  its section
                                                                      through spandril at fig 1 p 48 1 showing the ball much
                                                                      smaller.  the cavette enlarged, as well as the fillets:
