[M.210L] [M.210] Ducal Palace. Niches. 210 [diagram] fluted on the 5 or four sides outwards, so as to be of section a or b opposite (I suppose it to have a joint at each angle) The crown about it is of eight separate pieces of red Verona: set on a separate block of the same as seen in drawing; these also are trefoiled only to the front. Their elevation and section at fig 2 p 47 l The flat ball in the niche spandril below is curious comp. Ca d’Oro: the Madonna dell ‘Orto has the same in its restored niches, and several other Venetian churches: (San Stefano and St Apollinare)? Arch section fig 3 and capital at fig 4, it has a perfectly simple round headed Lombard leaf at each angle. The white block on the left of fig 1 is a {rough} mass put up behind its innter shaft - very dexterously out of sight from below, to give it strength. The inside of the niche is a pure and simple cross vault, horizontal at top. Thus much for the eastern niche: The western, still towards sea, is the same in most respects, but is evidently a later imitative work. the capital has the morbid and curvilinear section fig 5 p 47 l and looks like a perfect tulip. a curious instance of the spoiling of a simple design in later hands The northern & western niche - over judgment of Solomon is the most remarkable I found in Venice; its section through spandril at fig 1 p 48 l showing the ball much smaller. The cavetto enlarged, as well as the fillets: Formed of this section
