                                                                      	No 124, 125  BYZANTINE HOUSE NEAR FOSCARI
                                                                      Byzantine Houses:  The oldest which I have found consisttne with itself
                                                                      in Venice, I should consider that behind the Casa Foscari
                                                                      of which all the traces that remain are outlined  on No
                                                                      124.  Fig 2 on that paper, is the medallion marked 2 larger
                                                                      and fig 3 the cornice section A.  All the rest is in its
                                                                      right place, and about right proportion, all that is drawn
                                                                      exists, and nothing more;  the rest being all built up
                                                                      on destroyed  This is especially to be regretted with
                                                                      regard to the smaller arches whose construction cannot be
                                                                      made out;  What can be made out is however very simple in
                                                                      plan;  the cornice A. and fig 3 runs along the whole
                                                                      range;  fragment of it only appearing until the flank of
                                                                      the large aisle, when lcukily the whole plaster head
                                                                      and simple cylindrical shaft head attached and preserved
                                                                      and seen in No 125, while the bases are safe all along, and
                                                                      show that the main arch has been carried by pilasters;
                                                                      (Compare round arches of rich house upstairs near Rialto)
                                                                      while each lateral arch has had two shafts, thrown into
                                                                      pairs between then, and terminating again in a pilaster
                                                                      at the side of the house.  One of the pairs of bases,
                                                                      which are all of red Verona marble, is given fig 1 p 73 1
                                                                      Gothic book.  The shafts are however all gone; but I
                                                                      found the intervals between ring and ring, u.e. from
                                                                      point ta in fig 1 p 73 1 to its opposite C; on No 124.
