215 175 No 124, 125 BYZANTINE HOUSE NEAR FOSCARI Byzantine Houses: The oldest which I have found consisttne with itself in Venice, I should consider that behind the Casa Foscari of which all the traces that remain are outlined on No 124. Fig 2 on that paper, is the medallion marked 2 larger and fig 3 the cornice section A. All the rest is in its right place, and about right proportion, all that is drawn exists, and nothing more; the rest being all built up on destroyed This is especially to be regretted with regard to the smaller arches whose construction cannot be made out; What can be made out is however very simple in plan; the cornice A. and fig 3 runs along the whole range; fragment of it only appearing until the flank of the large aisle, when lcukily the whole plaster head and simple cylindrical shaft head attached and preserved and seen in No 125, while the bases are safe all along, and show that the main arch has been carried by pilasters; (Compare round arches of rich house upstairs near Rialto) while each lateral arch has had two shafts, thrown into pairs between then, and terminating again in a pilaster at the side of the house. One of the pairs of bases, which are all of red Verona marble, is given fig 1 p 73 1 Gothic book. The shafts are however all gone; but I found the intervals between ring and ring, u.e. from point ta in fig 1 p 73 1 to its opposite C; on No 124. 3 " 8 from c to d 3 " 10 from d2 to e 3 " 10 and e2f 3. 8 vide p 177.
