                                                                      way blunt and miserable in cutting but the design so
                                                                      good and the point of  shadh -so set - witness the wreath
                                                                      at p 50 when the stems are carefully rounded and deep cut
                                                                      down - though not under - and where the use of the
                                                                      (ivy?) leaf is peculiarly dextrous:  the pattern of leaf
                                                                      is varied on every one of the shafts that have ut, but is
                                                                      the same in style.
                                                                      The Gothic work is later:  and as far as I could see, very
                                                                      good;  I think middle of 14th century, or perhaps later
                                                                      the features of the Venice well cut and refined.
                                                                      In fig 1 the section of capital gives the leaves of the
                                                                      rude imitative Corinthian one, Note the strange shape of
                                                                      the bell like St mark’s inside.
