[M.134L] [M.134] Frari. Pacific Tomb. San Giov. e. Paolo 134 In Venice and its Lagoons. The basreliefs on the tomb are said to be in "creta cotta" The body of the Beato the hollow and dark spaces being for the most part veiled with Pacifico Bono was laid here in 1437. cobwebs: the lights loaded with dust - gold remaining here and there in unseemly patches, mixed with the dullbrick red of the stucco, the colours mildewed or darkened, and the projections rubbed or broken away, there is not a single line of the composition which has its intended effect - or which can be either felt or judged justly: the angels [diagram] with instruments have much of the Angelico quality and appear the best part of the monument: the Baptism behind is mannered yet graceful - the attendant angels are numerous; and in their action and in their full draperies they are more like women, but for their richly plumed wings. The sarcophagus itself is the worst - the composition of the resurrection very vile; the descent into hell somewhat better, but the arrnagement of the whole thoroughly meagre and bad, & richly meriting Selva’s condemnation. Here again we see the curious adaptation of tracery to upper lights, thinning it: The entire window is the one which forms the lower half of apse, as at A. opp. B. is the lower half b opp: in which the double edge of cusp is conjectural, but I have no doubt is accurate. p2 p3 being the section across it at p4.
