into water.                                                           Fig 1 begins with one of the front rolls, a b: It is curious
                                                                      		that these rolls should not fall united on the abacus
                                                                      		but separated by about ½ an inch: as seen in elevation
                                                                      		fig 3 which also shows the recess between the rolls
                                                                      		from which most assuredly in this pillar, the marbles
                                                                      		have been taken away:  Here then we have had marble
                                                                      		coating solid masonry.  The pure semicircles of the rolls
[diagram]                                                             		continued united at their bases up to the recess, which is about
                                                                      		2 inches deep, and thence upwards the section of archivolt
                                                                      		is of course as opposite (fig 1).  the recess a b being quite rough hewn.
                                                                      		Fig 1 with its measures inside (p c Palace book giving on

                                                                      		which is of course the half of back section & opposite a of
                                                                      		fig 1.  Observing the abacus octagonal, its side given
                                                                      		and the distance s s2 I can construct all.
                                                                      No 90 is only kept as the original of the figure on next
                                                                      		page l which is a tracery of part of section opposite with
                                                                      		its dogtooth real size.
                                                                      No 91 to 94 descend and fit in order: they are traced
                                                                      		on the pieces of inlaid stone of the right hand side of
                                                                      		the arch described on last page, and on No 87.  The
