8 1 Dijon 7th Oct. 1849 AUTUMNAL JOURNEY 1849. Truth. Passages respecting it in Proverbs: may be topically arranged thus. 1. God’s Love of Truth: and Hatred of Lying. Among the Seven things which are abomination unto God, VI 17 the Second is "the Lying Tongue", and the 5th the False witness that speaketh lies: Now I imagine the first of these to be spoken of Falsehood generally: and the Second more especially of False preaching: in which sense if the word Witness be generally understood, it will give peculiar force to many passages of Proverbs. Vid below II. Again, XII 22 "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord but they that deal truly are his delight:" Ah, if one could but feel, ever so little, what i[r]t was to be a Delight of God. II. The Saving of Souls by Speaking Truth: thus 14 25 "A true witness delivereth souls: but a false witness speaketh lies." Probably there is a meaning of the same kind in 12, 17 He that speakeath truth showeth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit: which is either comparatively a meaningless verse, or one pregnant with exceeding meaning: as that he who preaches truly, shows forth Christ’s righteousness, but
