                                                                      Door in St Marks.  Opens from the extremity of atrium into north
                                                                      		transept.  No 116. General view:  The mosaic below is
                                                                      		I believe an addtion at the time of the leaf plinth
                                                                      		architrave.  No 117. l. angel on the right hand side
                                                                      		as one looks at the door.  Note the hair sympathizing with
                                                                      		the arabesque leaf roll.  2.  Wing of angel with part
                                                                      		of leaf ornament. note the single plume ruffled by the
                                                                      		point of the leaf.  3. section of archivolt  4th one of
                                                                      		the leaves of No 2 on the right. better drawn, showing
                                                                      		the commencement of the incisions which leave the ribs.
                                                                      		the great stalk being (semi) cylindrical.  5 the leaf
                                                                      		border a in figs 2 and 3:  6. section of do. larger than in
                                                                      		No 3:  In working the vineleaves of No 2 an incision is
                                                                      		made on each side of the rib, to the extremity of the leaf, and
                                                                      		branched to each lobe.  All is worked down from the flat vide also next page.
                                                                      Note		The passage about Gothic in Maffei’s Verona is not far from
                                                                      Gothic		the beginning of the eleventh book.  As Maffei denies that
                                                                      		even the Lombards did anything, it is worth consulting.
                                                                      		That German artists worked in after times there is of course
                                                                      		no question.
