book                                                                  		today  (Xmas) to be common to the leaves of the crossed
                                                                      		capitals of triforium of St Mark’s.  This capital has
                                                                      		rude doves sitting on its leafy basket;  its twisted
                                                                      		shaft is the same as the rest and has the same base: the
                                                                      		capital being of course adapted - but the smallness
                                                                      		of the dogt. is remarkable in all.  This central
                                                                      		shaft has round it 42 dogt. each only ½ an in
                                                                      		square: (giving 1 " 9 only for its circumference):  I
                                                                      		guessed the square of teeth - it must be something more
                                                                      		or rather, they must be a little longer than high:  but
                                                                      		their number is accurate and the shaft not much more
                                                                      		than 8 in; in diameter:  Both the capital and
                                                                      		shaft are of coarse sugary white marble, like Parian:
                                                                      		but the base of red marble; with four fine ribbed

The plinth is also                                                    shafts		and coil, as that described at p 89 i.e. 5 each with
